Topic: FIBER OPTIC CABLE: FROM CONCEPT TO COMMERCIAL SUCCESS
Speaker: DR. DALE POWERS
Abstract:
The information carrying capacity of fiber optic cables is a critical enabling technology for the information revolution of the 21st century. Learn how this technology was transformed from a laboratory curiosity with limited applications to the low cost, high performance material which enables the high traffic loads on internet today.
Dale Powers joined the project soon after the first key inventions were made and was present as optical fibers moved from the laboratory to large scale commercialization. He will present the technical and commercial history of this product. The development of fiber optic cable was more than a technical challenge. It required cooperation between the developer and the end user customers to create a product that is so useful today. The communications infrastructure of the entire world was transformed by the introduction of this technology to common use.
The development and commercialization of fiber optic cable is an example of the strategic vision, technological excellence, commitment and industry-wide cooperation that is required to bring disruptive and transformational technologies to the market. Understanding this history will help you understand how to succeed in the challenges we face in today’s technology market.
About the Speaker:

He has taught at Elmira College since 2003, after retiring from a successful 28 year career with Corning Inc., NY working on optical fibers. He received 36 patents and the highest distinction of title Research & Development Fellow during his work at Corning. In 2001 he received the People Development Award from both the Science and Technology Division, and the Optical Fiber Division. Currently, Dale regularly teaches Basic Chemistry (introductory chemistry for science majors) and occasionally teaches Physics with Calculus, Physical Chemistry, and Astronomy. He has also taught travel courses to the Bahamas and to Australia.
